Rockers and Floors
Christams has come early this year and I splurged on a
set of "new" desert doors. One from Arizona (impala
door), one from New Mexico (SS door). I had them
chemically dipped and they came out absolutely fantastic.
Drivers side door, which
was the AZ door
Unfortunately, the other door "developed" some rust holes
that were not apparent before dipping. 95% of the holes
I was able to weld shut (smaller that 1/32") which I
actually drilled out larger to make sure I was working with
solid metal. This part I'll have to make a patch for
There were also a couple of creases in the door as well. I
massaged the really bad one with a little hammer/dolly
work, and will user filler on the other. I'd love to metal
finish these doors like the pros, but I don't have enough
experience with it yet and I don't want to screw up my
doors.
The drivers side door in SPI epoxy primer. I DA'd the entire door
(front and back) with 80 grit, wiped in down with SPI waterborn
GAWR (grease and wax remover). This stuff lays down slicker than
snot on a door knob. I let it induce for about 30 minutes before
spraying the back and front was spray about 45 minutes later.
With Christmas holidays going on, I'm hoping to
hang the drivers side door yet before I have to
go back to work and start fitting rocker... YAH!
01/21/07 - It may appear that I'm not working on the car, but actually I
have been hitting it pretty hard, just been lazy in doing the updates to the
webpage
I did additional work on the passenger side door to fix
up the pinholes. I also welded up the SS trim holes as
well, but don't have pics of that. The SS trim holes
were about 1/2" diameter, much to large to weld shut,
so I trimmed up a 1/2" diamter slug, fit it to the hole
and welded around the seam. It worked pretty slick
I've gotten all the door prep work complete and the doors installed so
I can start checking the door/rocker gaps. Its a moot point on the
passenger side right now as the original outer rocker is still installed,
but the drivers side is another story
